Lewis Our church softball team was faced with a testing point this past Monday; an ineluctable fork in the road that defines a person, a team, and perhaps an entire generation. Down by four runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs - the Prodigals were taking on water and seemingly sunk. Their dream of a perfect season was in peril. However, the courage of Adam Wenhafel (friend of a preschool parent) kept the boat afloat and the dream alive. Wenhafel was called to bat. However, a nasty tweak to his hamstring in a previous inning had forced him to the bench. In church softball, there are no pinch hitters. If he didn’t bat, it would be an automatic out and the inning would be over. Coach Saunders explained this inconvenient truth to Wenhafel, followed bluntly by, “What do you want to do?” No words were necessary in his response; his eyes did all the talking as he ripped the bat from Coach Saunders’ hand and marched to the plate with a full heart. With one mighty swing, he launched the ball sky high, and it fell between two opposing outfielders who had been impenetrable all night. Adam’s selflessness kept the Prodigals in the game, allowing for four more runs to be driven in, bringing the score within one in the bottom of the last inning. This led to Mario Martini (preschool dad) - banged up with a hamstring injury of his own - driving in the game winning run. The Prodigals remain unbeaten. A single act of courage can make all the difference. There are no games for two weeks. Our next game is Mon, June 3rd, 7:15pm, Field One vs IKAR
