Henry Ansgar (Andy) Kelly, professor of English at UCLA and one-time Director of UCLA’s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, completed his doctoral studies at Harvard, where he was a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows. A former Jesuit seminarian and cleric in minor orders (including exorcist), he specializes in Church history and religious studies, and has written on such subjects as the prosecutions of Joan of Arc and Galileo, including a recent article, “Judicial Torture in Canon Law and Church Tribunals: From Gratian to Galileo.” Among his many books are The Matrimonial Trials of Henry VIII and Thomas More’s Trial by Jury. Three of his books are on the figure of the Devil as he appears in the Bible and Christian tradition, the latest being Satan: A Biography (Cambridge University Press, 2006).
