Elder Job Description

Scope and Dimensions of the Position:  A Ruling Elder will be chosen as outlined in the Book of Order 2017-2019 (pg. 27) G-2.0301.  The New Testament Church provided persons with particular gifts to share in discernment of God’s Spirit and governance of God’s people. Accordingly, congregations should elect persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders are so named not because they “lord it over” the congregation, but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

Seek the will of Christ, endeavor to lead the congregation toward a closer walk with Jesus, praying and discerning God’s path for this, His Church, Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church.

 Attend monthly Session meetings, as well as special called meetings.

 Lead a devotion prior to a session meeting when assigned, and offer closing reflections or a prayer.

  • Serve on your assigned committee, acting as Chair, Liaison or Vice-Chair of that committee, and recruit congregational members to participate.
  • Assist in serving communion to the congregation with other elders or deacons.
  • Serve as Beadle as needed at Sunday services .
  • Attend the Annual Session Retreat normally held in January of each year.
  • Attendance at Session meetings is required; if you have two or more unexcused absences in a year, be prepared to justify.
  • Become familiar with the Book of Order, and the list of duties and responsibilities of Ruling Elders written therein.

Qualifications:

  • A heart for God, and a willingness to serve His Church.
  • Be listed as an “active” member of Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church.
  •  Strong leadership and organizational skills; good people skills.

 

Deacon Job Description

Scope and Dimension of the Position

A Deacon will be chosen as outlined in the Book of Order 2017-2019 (pg. 26) G-2.0201. “The ministry of Deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress.  Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.”

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Seek the will of Christ, endeavor to serve the flock you are assigned toward a closer walk with Jesus.
  • Pray for your flock and be an example of Jesus’ servitude towards each of them, as God’s children.
  • Attend monthly and special called meetings of the Board of Deacons.
  • Lead devotions prior to the meeting when assigned and/or offer a closing prayer or reflections.
  • Serve on a Deacon Committee mutually determined with the Moderator of the Board of Deacons.
  • Some Deacons may be asked to prepare the elements for communion the first Sunday worship service of each month.
  • Serve the congregation in times of need.
  • Attend the annual Deacon retreat.

  • Be listed as an “active” member of Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church.

 

Nominating Committee Member Job Description

Scope and Dimensions of the Position: Members of the Nominating Committee that are selected include: (1) one Ruling Elder as Committee Chair, (2) a second Ruling Elder (Vice Chair), (3) one Deacon representative, and (4) Four Members of the congregation, each of whom are Church Members in good standing.  In addition, two Alternate members may be selected from the congregation, who do not have voting privileges, except in the absence of a Regular Committee member.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Seek the will of Christ, endeavor to lead the congregation toward a closer walk with Jesus, praying and discerning God’s path for this, His Church, Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church.
  •  Attend monthly or intermittent Committee meetings as well as special called meetings.
  • Nominate a church member for any church officer positions that become open due to illness, death, or resignation during their year of service (Elder, Deacon or Nominating Committee), on which the congregation will vote.
  • Create a recommended Fall slate of Nominees for Elder, Deacon and Nominating Committee positions for the subsequent year, on which the congregation will vote.
  • Maintain, and update as needed, the Nominating Committee Member notebooks, which are passed on to the following year’s Committee members.
  • Become familiar with the Book of Order and the list of duties and responsibilities of this committee as well as church officers written therein.

  • Good people skills.
  • Be listed as an “active” member of Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church for a minimum of 2 years.
